The construction of the male role in Roma families in the context of social exclusion, in the statements of Roma men

This rigorous thesis deals with the construction of the male role in Romani families living in Czech socially excluded localities, using literature and data from narrative interviews. At the theoretical level, the thesis is based on a culturally determined construction of masculinity, which is primarily based on hegemonic masculinity according to Connell (2005). Methodologically, the research is conducted qualitatively with the aim of exploring how masculine roles are constructed in the Roma family in a context of social exclusion, where there appears to be little hope of developing hegemonic masculinity. The research has been conducted from July to October 2021, through narrative interviews with Roma men living in socially excluded settings. Seven respondents living in two localities participated in the research. There are thirteen socially excluded localities in Ostrava according to ASZ (2018). The respondents were interviewed about events in their lives, including their experiences and attitudes.
